Most guys use an impossible situation as an excuse to do absolutely nothing.
You’re late for work, you have a short elevator ride together, or she’s in a massive rush, so you tell yourself it’s pointless. But it is entirely possible to secure a solid number in under a minute when you know how to condense the interaction.
When I challenged myself to get as many phone numbers as possible in two hours, I locked in 23 of them. This isn’t a circus stunt; it was a display of a highly effective technique called the 60-second number close.
The framework requires you to hit four stages in rapid succession: open, establish a man-to-woman premise, evaluate, and close.
In today’s market, you’ll likely face less friction closing for a girl’s Instagram than her phone number, but the psychological progression remains exactly the same.
Step one is to lean super heavily on your time constraint. By explicitly stating you are in a rush, opening with, “I literally don’t even have time to talk to you, but . . .”—you take the pressure off the interaction, enabling a seamless number close.
This artificial urgency grants you social permission to bypass the polite small talk and get straight to the point. It completely justifies the suddenness of the interaction and attempting to number close a girl you just met 45 seconds ago.
Step two is to go direct. You have no time to beat around the bush or try to be subtle. Whether you lead with a direct compliment or a sharp tease, you must establish premise immediately. Yes, you will catch a few more objections this way, but that is the necessary trade-off for operating under a tight clock.
Step three is the most overlooked: evaluation. To make a number solid, she needs to feel like she earned it based on something beyond her physical appearance. Since you don’t have time to put up an actual hurdle for her to jump through, you have to speak that reality into existence.
A quick statement like, “You actually have a surprisingly fun innocence about you. . . .” fills the gap. It provides the rationalization her brain needs so the interaction feels complete, rather than leaving her with the urge to flake later.
Finally, you close with total assumption. You do not ask, “Can I please have your number?” You state, “I’ll just have to take your number,” in a friendly yet assumptive tone of voice that conveys certainty.
This entire method was born when I was running late to give a speech on taking action, stepped into a hotel elevator with a beautiful woman, and realized it would be completely hypocritical to walk away. I had to employ the 60-second number close out of necessity.
Stop waiting for the perfect, comfortable scenario to present itself. Embrace the urgency, own your desire, and execute before time runs out.
