The Forgotten Pickup Line (Infield)

As a man, starting a conversation with a woman presents a fundamental dilemma.

You can be direct and immediately show your interest, which sets the tone for a romantic interaction. But if she isn’t immediately attracted to you, you risk an instant rejection.

On the other hand, you can start with something neutral and platonic . . . but this often leads to a conversation that goes nowhere—so you never establish attraction and you end up in the friend zone.

Most guys fall into one of these two traps: they either go direct and get shut down or stay too indirect and fail to build attraction. But what if I told you there’s a third option that combines the best of both worlds?

The Delayed Direct Opener

This method isn’t fully direct or fully indirect—it’s what I call Delayed Direct.

The idea is simple: instead of showing immediate interest and risking rejection, you use a neutral question to engage the woman first. This momentary delay—just 10–20 seconds—makes all the difference.

Let me tell you about a guy I met years ago who naturally used this approach.

We were trying to teach him traditional opinion openers like, “Who do you think lies more, men or women?”

But he hated following a script.

Instead he modified it: he’d start with something neutral to get the woman’s attention and then, once she was engaged, smoothly transition into showing interest.

Recently I had a student use a similar approach with great success.

He’d start with, “Hey, I need to ask you a really important question.”

Then again, once the woman was engaged, he’d take off his glasses dramatically and say, “What’s your name?”

It was playful, intriguing, and avoided immediate rejection.

Why the Delayed Direct Opener Works

This method works because:

  1. It gets the woman’s attention: A simple question makes her stop and engage.
  2. It bypasses knee-jerk rejections: Since you’re not coming on strong from the first second, she’s less likely to shut you down immediately.
  3. It still establishes attraction: Once you have her attention, you smoothly transition into direct interest, making the interaction man-to-woman.

So next time you’re out, try this: Start with a neutral but engaging question.

Once the woman is engaged, transition into expressing interest. You’ll be surprised at how well it works.

This opener is the best of both worlds—it keeps things smooth, avoids immediate rejection, and allows you to show attraction naturally.

Try it out.

It’s a game-changer.
