Why We Need Adversity

This morning, I woke up to hear my young son singing “99 Bottles of Milk on the Wall.” Cute, right?

But it hit me how we’ve watered down songs, stories, and lessons for kids.

Originally “99 Bottles of Beer,” the song had rhythm, alliteration, and a jovial spirit. Swapping “beer” for “milk” may seem harmless, but it’s emblematic of a larger issue: we’re sanitizing the world for our children at the expense of its lessons.

This trend extends beyond songs. Take the classic, I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.

The original ends with the darkly humorous line, “Perhaps she’ll die.” Now?

That’s replaced with something bland, stripping the song of its spice and teaching kids that life’s harsher truths can be ignored.

But here’s the thing: death is part of life. Shielding kids from it doesn’t protect them—it leaves them unprepared for the inevitable.

Even in modern fairy tales, adversity is erased. Original Grimm’s stories were dark morality tales with real stakes.

Today, everything ends in sunshine and rainbows. But life isn’t always a happy ending, and kids need to learn resilience.

Adversity isn’t the enemy—it’s how we grow.

I see the same over-coddling in other areas.

My son’s school encourages kindness, which is wonderful.

But when playtime stops because one kid pouts, and everyone caters to their feelings, it reinforces whining as a tool for attention.

Kids need to learn to solve problems, face adversity, and understand the world doesn’t revolve around them.

As a society, we’re dismantling what worked—our “Chesterton’s Fence,” the stories and structures that built resilient generations.

Adversity, struggle, and even failure are essential for growth. Let’s not rob our children of the lessons that made us strong.

Instead, let’s prepare them for the real world, where challenges are inevitable, but overcoming them is what shapes us.
